Thread: HDTV for Comp Monitor?

    Default HDTV for Comp Monitor?

I completely lay claim to ignorance concerning this matter.

I have been using an age old CRT monitor since well . . . the beginning of PC time.

When I recently bought a netbook, well, I guess I started to understand what I was missing in picture quality and such.

Looking at prices, and picture size, I began wondering: If all of these new fangled LED/LCD TV's have hook-ups for computers, do they make just as good monitors? Do they get back ghosting or something?

Anyway, I poked around other places online and it seems kind of equal grounds. Some believe they make great monitors and others feel they lack precision.

So, where does this forum stand?

If you can read small text on it, I'd say it's fine. I think they are mostly limited to a 60hz refresh rate input from the computer, if that matters?

I've used my 42" TV a couple times for movies from my laptop, and I would say that the TV was better because it didn't have any aliasing when the movie was playing, whereas that happens sometimes on my laptop screen.

Check available resolutions to make sure 1600x1200 or 1900x1200 are supported, and make sure you have it demo'd for you. Sometimes certain resolutions look horrible on TV's. IMHO you should not buy one for PC/Games unless you see it working in a store.

That is a limit of many monitors, not a limit of PCs. Hence why you can purchase 120hz refresh rate LCDs, which are required for Nvidia 3D.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I suspect you'd be hard pressed to find any major differences between using an HDTV or an LCD monitor, except that i'd guess you will probably pay more for the TV to come with features you don't need.

I had my gaming rig back home hooked up to a Samsung 57 inch HDTV. It was a DLP, 1080i. Played DAoC, LotRO, Warhammer and Age of Conan on it. They were absolutely stunning and there's nothing like seeing your toon at almost 8 inches tall.

When in reality it's only 3 inches? You may want to respond to one of those spam emails.

On topic, tv's work just fine as long as they support the resolution you want to play in (and you're not too close). When Doom3 came out, I hooked up my rig to the 55" we had in the living room at the time, and damn was that beautiful looking.

Interesting side note, if you type in zing in google images, you get a lot of chicks who wrote on their body.

    Strange.
