    This week PlanetSide 2 is releasing info on some of the weapons that will be in the game, through their news section.

    So far we have the Repeater, Chaingun, and two variants on the Cycler. While their descriptions are disappointingly brief we can learn a few tidbits. The Cycler variant is stated as being class specific, so it's likely that other classes will have specific modifications available for the primary rifles. The repeater now comes with a three round burst and fifteen shot clip offering five shots, which could be a basic balance move to compensate for a return of the shotgun pistol of the NC in Planet Side 1, but what quirk will be added to the Vanu pistol?

    If these new pictures are of the Cycler, what is the rifle we see the TR using in all the screenshots and videos?

    It's either TR's carbine/SMG, or it's what the Cycler used to look like when PS2 was just going to be a PS1 update.

    Keep in mind, nearly every question people asked about these weapons a few months ago was being answered with "CUS TIM EYE ZAY SHUN". Not only will there probably be things like extended mags and scopes, but also things that improve certain aspects of the gun while reducing another. Hell, we might even be able to customize our weapon's colour scheme (within our empire's colour palette).

    This game really needs a Catacombs squad, having seen what an organized squad could do in PS1 we could clean up. When is the game scheduled to be released?

    They haven't dared hint. I think it'll probably be this year, later rather than sooner, but it could be a 2013 release. I'm not getting the impression that they're rushing to meet any deadlines which is good. Hopefully it means it won't be released before it's ready.

    Three.

    Snipers and infiltrators exist within the same class, but there'll be restrictions on the cloaking for snipers and infiltrators using any "large" weapons (I understand they'll have access to certain rifles as well).

    You can see the sniper in the second image on the lower-left branch, about a third of the way along (uncloaked).

    No details yet, but it'll probably be a darklight equivalent, possibly implemented in a more imaginative way. I think they might be in the process of playing about with shaders for the stealth and stealth detection mechanics, to avoid a repeat of PS1 where people boosted their gamma to see cloakers easier.

    What would your melee cert entail?

    Only thing we've heard about melee so far was them deciding whether to have a "quick" knife (CoD) or a drawn knife. I don't think we were ever told what they went with...

    Two handers that take up rifle slots and one handers that take pistol slots...

    First they'd be an extreme version of the jackhammer/amp thought process. You would have to be very close, they would do a ridiculous amount of damage almost assuring victory if you got the drop on someone, but with a slow reswing/refire rate. Second, they could be a solution to the personell vs armor situation. I never liked in other games how I could charge up to a vehicle and then... do nothing... If you caught a tank in a courtyard or forest, an anti-armor melee weapon would let you force someone to get OUT of the tank to come fight you. Though some kind of attaching explosive will probably fill that role. :/

    'Weapon Week' was a bit of a flop... they didn't post many of them and some hardly even have descriptions.

    They did put up a blurb about the Light assault. Seems they get to pick from a selection of jet/jump packs and tactical grenades like flashbangs and smoke grenades.

    I'm assuming you saw the NC and VS weapon weeks too?

    I'm fairly confident flashbangs won't just be blinding light and high-pitched squealing. If they are, expect people to bitch in beta, probably until it gets changed.

    I've never really had a problem with the traditional flashbang mechanics, maybe I'm a minority?

    Yes.

    Most people find the unpleasantness of your typical flashbang visual/sound effects outweigh whatever benefit they bring to the game.

    I don't have an issue with them either. It's really the only way to simulate a concussive blast in a video game.

    I don't see how people could "hate on" flashbangs. Turn your field of view and most games either negate or reduce the effects of the Fbang.

    I just don't think it belongs in gaming at all.

    IRL it's used to buy a little time because no one wants to get hit. In a game you have team mechanics for this. There is a specific tough guy with a room clearing weapon who can go in first if not a straight up MAX armor guy.

    Plus for every flashbang that gets used to enter an area there are a hundred that get tossed and go completely unused (And yes I stand by a 1:100 ratio after being admin on a CS:S server for years and playing multiple other games with flashes.). People just THROW THEM AND DO NOTHING like they accomplish something by blinding someone and making them wait three seconds, and when it wears off the situation is unchanged except the thrower has given away their position and put the flashed person on high alert.

    As long as only one class gets them, that class is squishy, and there's some kind of implant to neutralize/weaken the effect I'll be fine with it. But this could be a real deal breaker for me if done wrong.

    I always use flashes to "damage check" or blind a room I know enemies are in and proceed to rush in with a SMG and hipfire the blind/turned bastards.

    Reason #2 that people hate flashbangs.

    Also keep in mind, the player limit of PS2 will be more than 30x the player limit of BF3. That could make for a hell of a lot of flash spam.
