Default A must watch video for starting out in GW2

There was a lot that I tried to save for release. That meant I didn't do crafting, explore too much, or any kind of WvWvW. I did 100% completion of the starter map, and personal story in the starter area, yet was not nearly leveled enough for the next area. I remember talking with Taolas about this, and he recommended going to another race's starter zone.

I was still so used to the "traditional mmo" mode of thinking that I felt short changed.

This video does an excellent job explaining why my mentality was wrong. I found it incredibly informative.

Here is another video about how "twitchy" GW2 is or isn't.

BW3 I actually completed everything on the asura map without doing any crafting(I did gather whenever I saw nodes though) and I was level 16 by the end so you do indeed progress like you should be if you don't try to zip through the zone and just do heart events.

The key difference must have been gathering then. Because I did every dynamic event I could find (some as many as three times), got every point of interest, and did 100% completion of the Norn starting area and was only level 12.

Was this during BW3 when they added Vistas? Those give quite a bit of xp as well. Gathering does give a LOT of xp though, like 60 per node. I had a huge stack of mats by the time I finished the zone.

Nah this was BW2, so I didn't have access to Vistas either. I forgot about those.

That PvE video makes me even more excited. I love the way they're approaching PvE, forcing the exploration aspect of it, as well as incorporating crafting, and making you go beyond just the classic quest/grind/dungeon template.

    Some other things:

You should really really want every skill point. Running through each starter area to quickly grab them all should give you plenty of xp. You'll get some waypoints and exploration along the way.

I haven't heard anything about kill streaks. You get bonus xp from mobs that are alive for a long time... so killing something people are ignoring can sometimes give you a bit extra. Also, you can easily get a consumable that gives +10xp per kill, which isn't bad. My gun crafter could do it with like 3 bone fragments or something. Doing a group event with a ton of mobs spawning should work well with an xp boost.

I don't like the combat video. He's fighting junk animals. Most enemies will drop you with ranged attacks and AoE. Usually it's more of a distance and control skills game than a run in circles game.

Yeah I agree with Taolas on that. I usually only circle strafe melee monsters. Even then, not non stop like he did in the video. Still, I think it gets the point across that you can't just stand there and play rockemsockem like in previous mmo's-- without being too "twitchy".

Breakdown of class and race poll from a 5k sample:

Not surprised that, warrior is the most popular. Its an amazing class. I expected Mesmer last, place though...

LOL I was thinking about it last night and leaning towards an engineer indeed.

Interesting though that 1st place got 16% and last got 9%. That's a pretty even spread - a good thing IMO.

Yeah I agree. I expect it to change dramatically anyways. The professions don't really play like you expect. I think once people get in game their opinions will change a lot. Unless you really want to play the Warrior. Then, your opinion will probably stay the same. I think guardians are going to move up into the number two or maybe even one spot come launch though.

Guardian is what I may switch to if I don't like the engineer. That or a thief.

Made a short video of some female Asura battle cries while doing a skill point as the Engineer. Really like how they did them.

A must read article as well:

I don't know if they fixed it at some point, but at one point at least you could set up a smoke field as a thief and they spam a leap skill against a wall to rack up about a minute of stealth (long enough for you to be able to repeat the process if you find another wall).
