Default I'm a fag, actually considering suscribing for 1 month to WoW.

Yeah so there was some kind of 10 day trial for the Witch King expansion. I downloaded the necessary stuff, let it sit for 7 days without doing anything (just wanted to do something different to break up the Star Wars routine for a bit). But the last 3 days I went from like 21 to 30 just playing casually. I think it's the first time I've actually played through that Duskwood or whatever area. (halloween type theme). I know it's the first time I've ever played in Stranglethorn and I found myself liking the feel of the area. That free play trial is up but I enjoyed a little battleground action on my hunter as well and am seriously thinking about just goofing off on WoW a little bit. I've never actually done any raiding outside of DAoC/Warhammer and it was very limited in War. I've considered joining a big guild and trying out the raiding in WoW for a few reasons, the 2 primary being it'll be something different for a change and one day I'd like to have some actual experience from WoW to reflect on. I mean it is the biggest MMO of all time and whether I agree with it's success or not, having so little experience with it would be a little like never hearing the Beetles even if you hate their style.

So I guess my question is, can you think of any reason to talk me out of it? And 2ndly is the game being as old as it is going to make it super hard to participate in? I've noticed inflation is a freaking beast on the auction hall but is there anything else I should worry about?

60 buck buy in and I don't see myself playing it a lot. Unrestrained server transfers, no RP server, etc. :-( I would love a free to play fantasy MMO to bring back that warm fuzzy DAoC feeling but I don't think GW2 will be it. I'll see later after it's release though, not completely writing it off.

If you've never actually raided in WoW, then I don't see a reason for you to be talked out of it. For all the things people moan about, it did a lot of things better than anyone else and as you say, it's a pretty major part of video-game history.

That said, you'll probably need Cataclysm to actually get to raid anything, unless you happen to be on a server with a niche level 80 community.

It costs gems, the games premium currency, to switch servers, and the cost scales with the population of the server. So you'll either be spending real money or farming a bunch of gold to trade for gems if you want to hop servers. Not exactly what I call unrestrained. Server pride is definitely a thing in GW2.

This. You can hop between servers to do PVE and the like, but for WvWvW you can only play for your home server against those your home server is pitted against.

Personally I think having to 'pay' to hop servers is kind of stupid considering you can only PvE if you do. Not a true transfer by any stretch of the imagination.

I thought the entire point of being able to change servers was to hop around with your friends? Perhaps I read a 2ndary article on the game that misrepresented the server swapping aspect, but it was my understanding that people could just move from Nimue to Percivel depending on which group of friends was on that night.

Lol you posted that right before I made mine. That clears things up for me. I see where I got my impression from and what Graveworm means as well. It's actually both lol.

I agree it sounds kinda dumb. I suppose it's a clever way to make PvsP stay true to a server but if you're a PvsE only type person then who cares if you jump servers. I really don't see how this is any different than any other pay to transfer service offered by other games except if you decided you want to move permanently it seems you're screwed when it comes to WvWvW.

You actually do fully transfer servers. You just can't wvwvw on the server you transfer to until the current matchup between servers is over. This was explained in a blog article on arena.net a long time ago.

There is literally no reason for you to not play WoW. I played it for 6 months and loved it at the time, just wasn't for me in the endgame. Not for me, but great game, very well polished and planned out. Judging by how you've liked things like LOTR and the PvE side of SWTOR, you should dig WoW PvE.

Yeah WoW is a great game, just one most of us are burnt out on. Personally, I still say Rift is the better game. It's much more beautiful to look at.

There is no reason not to play WoW unless you are a hipster who doesn't like anything that is popular. It is the best mmo ever made to date. If it isn't the type of mmo you like that is fine but you can't argue that the quality of the game itself is bad. Personally I'm sick to death of Wow and am playing daoc again.

    CLARIFICATION:
Just to clarify and make sure everyone has the right idea, paid transfers are for World vs. World home server. PvE can be done on a friend's server at any time for free and sPvP is cross-server by nature. PvE guesting may not be fully functional by launch, but it is already partially functional in beta.

The only thing about WoW currently is that everyone else playing is level 80, or so it seemed last year. I had whole zones to myself, literally no one else was there, while I was levelling up. I was the only person in Stranglethorn (one of my favourite zones) and my herb gathering went through the roof as all the nodes were mine! mine! mine!

I sometimes wonder if I should try WoW too. My 2 1/2 weeks sometime in 2005 (iirc) didn't draw me in and I never looked back. Probably gave up on it too quickly.

It just boils down to me not wanting to get into subscription gaming again when there's so much else to try out. Same goes for Rift.

Yeah I am in the same boat, WoW never really drew me in like other MMOs have. This is the first time I've made it past lvl 30. I'm not quite sure if trying to experience the game for the "cultural enlightenment" of it is enough for me to drop 15 bucks. That's another month of the Old Republic, some points in LotRO, etc.

Rift is actually F2P now as well. I found myself on LotRO last night while I'm still contemplating subscribing to WoW.

100% faggotry. Unless we're talking about the endgame raiding scene in WoW which I've never really done then I've never understood why people think this. The game is nothing but nintendo 64 graphics doing fed ex and kill X bears quests. From what I can tell you aren't even allowed to spec across specilialties anymore to create unique combos. The only reason I'm considering subscribing to the game is because for the first time ever it actually pulled me in with Duskwood and Stranglethorn. Not more than a dozen other MMOs, just almost to the level that games I never even subscribed to did. It's the fact that the raiding is what WoW is known for that is kind of making me regret never having experienced more of the game. It's a bit like a missed experience, even thought it may/may not end up being my cup of tea just as much as the majority of the game.

I'd compare it to not being a PvsP MMO'er who never even got to try RvsR in DAoC. Even if you aren't a PvsP nut you still missed something if you didn't get to experience the 3 realm brawl that was DAoC. I'm just wondering if WoW raiding might have been the same.

Personally I think WoW was a great game through and through. However, I hate their view on raiding and expansions in regards to raiding/endgame progression. Don't get me wrong,I found most endgame content fun the first few times and the expansions have always produced good enoyable content, but they were stuck in the old school eq dkp style of raiding, though switching from guild maintained dkp to real dkp esque currency through the course of the expansions.

I've wanted to try out Cataclysm just to see the changes to the world, but I think that is something that will never see fruition given my current lifestyle. Regardless, if I did play again, or was just starting for the first time now (and WoW is a good thing to experience imo) I would play it to experience the world, slow down and enjoy the zones and content. When you do start raiding, do it casually just to experience the content. Never devalue it to farm status. It is much more enjoyable this way imo.

All that said, I will never forgive them for what they did to my 60 priest when Burning Crusade came out. Literally weeks of playtime from pvp, pve to gathering and crafting rendered useless. Not just marginally useless, but completely and utterly useless. I've never felt like I've wasted more time in a game then when that occured.

    WoW and OOT

Also, the game isn't nothing but fed ex and kill quests. Sure, they're plentiful, but that's not a claim you can make at level 40.

My favorite questline in the game is the one in Wrath of the Lich King, when you earn the favor of the Valkyrie-expies. The final challenge is riding a dragon in a giant dragonrider melee where you use your grappling hook to shoot from mount to mount, knocking every other rider to their deaths. It's not a very difficult quest, but damned if it doesn't make you feel like a badass.

Rift F2P only goes to level 20. That's good enough if you never tried the game before but I was past that when I last played.

If it was to do F2P, I'd still go with LOTRO most likely.

Yeah I've been on LotRO today, forgot how much fun that game can be. Still mulling over the WoW thing.

Yeah that was awful, but at least tier 3 lasted until karazhan for me.

I don't really give a shit about graphics, quests or raiding for that matter. I like WoW for its arena. None of that was what I was refering to though. I was more refering to its high level of polish, design and balance.
