Default New TV show for VK

Sons of Anarchy or Eureka? Other recommendations?

Ruling out Dexter. Everyone always just immediately says DEXTER but I've seen the first two seasons and it's just not my kind of show. 24 got old, Lost got stupid, and True Blood went waaaayyyy out there, but I liked them all early on. I watched all of the X-Files on netflix and loved it until they ran it into the ground at the end instead of just killing everybody or something. Loving Breaking Bad, but I'm caught up and episodes aren't coming out right now.

Yeah Breaking Bad was the shit. Shame that the next season won't be released to Netflix for another year at least. I think Walking Dead should have another season released this month, but in the meantime, I am going to give Sons of Anarchy a go.

I tried to watch Eureka once, got about 3 shows in and then never watched another episode. It seems like it would be entertaining, even while watching it, it had all the elements there but something was missing.

    I recommend Better Off Ted.

Edit: Don't let the fact that Better Off Ted is only two seasons keep you from watching it if you haven't.

A few weeks ago I got addicted to Pawn Stars. Marou can attest to the fact that it somehow pulls you in and you can't stop watching.

Have you seen the recent British Sherlock series? Some of the fanbase is annoyingly obsessive, but it's awesome. Two seasons of three episodes each.

    Firefly/Fringe/Dollhouse?

I also recently watched the first season of Treme, which was pretty good.

Fuck Pawn Stars and fuck that bald guys laugh. Even if you didn't have to watch them swindle everybody out of their money, i'd still want to punch him just for laughing like that.

How are they swindling people out of their money? It is a pawn shop, people are lucky if they get like... 40 to 50% of what the item is really worth. Which is why it is funny as hell when someone wants full price for their shit. I have also seen them offer more money for something because the item turned out to be more valuable than the customer thought.

The bald guys laugh doesn't bug me, the guys son on the other hand... what a fucking prick.

Well, by doing their job. That's how. Set up shop somewhere people will be desperate for a buck(Vegas) and bam, you have profit. It's certainly their customers fault, maybe they're too dumb or too desperate to not take the paltry offer these guys give them. Doesn't really make it less nefarious though and i'm not sure why anybody would want to watch a show celebrating it.

I just found out there's a pure pwnage TV show, which I'm now watching. I only found 8 eps though so that's probably all there is.

Louie (Louis CK show on FX) - great show, very funny at times, very unique and weird at other times. Has a story arc (kinda loose early on, prevalent now in season 3) which as I recall you require.

Boardwalk Empire is great, season 3 just started back up.

I've considered getting into Doctor Who recently, as all I ever hear about it are rave reviews. Only other show I remember hearing such consistently great things about was Battlestar, which did not disappoint.

If anyone here hasn't seen Blue Mountain State, I urge you to watch that. Incredibly hilarious show about a college football team, that has absolutely nothing to do with football.

I watched the whole run of Eureka--the first season is the best, and it goes downhill from there. I describe it as "cute" to friends who haven't heard of it.

If you haven't seen Mad Men, do it. I avoided this show for a long time because I didn't like the pilot--gave it another look and loved it. I haven't seen Sons of Anarchy, but everyone I know that watches it loves it.

I also loved True Blood up until the season that just ended, which was terrible.

Doctor Who fluctuates wildly from episode to episode. The 2005 series is where you want to start, but be aware that it's technically the 27th season and continues the Doctor Who series that ran from 1963-1989. There will be references to that, but they're usually explained for the younger generations that missed out the first time 'round.

Oh, but one thing you probably should know about the old series? Daleks are bad (don't Google them). Be afraid of Daleks. Be very, very afraid.

Aye, I meant the modern series. I've seen some clips of the old shows, don't think I could do it. Plus after the era of widescreen television I just cannot stand watching 4:3 anymore, at all. The Wire was recommended to me but I couldn't finish the first season for that reason alone.

I don't blame you, I wouldn't bother trying to watch the old ones either.

If you do start watching it, let me know if there's anything you want explained/elaborated on spoiler-free. Google's a minefield.

Like the Faberge Brooch that the woman brought in and asked for $2000 and he offered her $15000 because he knew it was worth way more than $2000. She then proceeded to haggle with him at that price.

The people on that show are morons who don't know that these people are buying your goods hoping that the item in question will sell by the end of that year for a 20% profit. Overhead isn't cheap, especially when you have massive insurance policies like they do.

That said, Boardwalk Empire is classy.

Yeah I hate pawn shop people period. I understand how they make their money and what they have to do to make money so my beef is why get in the fucking business in the first place. Anyone who would get screwed the way some of those people do are obviously desperate for money and making stupid decisions that they either will get shot for if they don't come up with the money or they will regret it later.

I don't understand why some of those people sell the fantastic family heirlooms they do for such shitty prices anyway. Really? I've got a samurai helmet your grandad took off the Jap he killed with his barehands and you're selling it at 20% of it's value, for 200 bucks, to help pay for your daughters 30k dollar wedding? Is 200 bucks really gonna make or break that wedding budget? Can't you like take some extra fucking hours at work or maybe door greet at Wal-Mart for a couple of weeks?

Then I remembered these are Vegas people and most of them would probably trade George Washington tombstone for a dime bag of weed.

I think pawn shops are stupid and unethical. But I also believe in freedom and free market, so fuck it.

Pawn shops don't buy your stuff. They loan you money and use your stuff as collateral. If you don't come get your shit back in 90 days or pay a fee to extend the loan, that's how they pay themselves back for the loan, by selling your collateral which you have abandoned to them as part of a perfectly legal and straightforward agreement. It's really not that seedy or complicated, people are just dumb. It offers an option to people who need money fast, even if it's at a low return. The only people who get fucked by selling to a pawn shop are people who don't plan ahead or use other options like eBay or CL to privately hawk their goods.

People who watch shows about pawn shops, though, now that's pretty odd.

Eh? Pawn shops do buy stuff, without loans. You get to chose which you want. People looking to make a quick buck seem to generally go for a pawn instead of straight selling. I do not see how its unethical. Not everyone goes to them for a quick buck cause they are broke. Sometimes you got something to sell and have no idea how to or want to deal with the hassle of it.

It is not only instant, its cash. You have few options if you want to make some money fast for whatever reason. It is far better than pay day or title loans.

And if someone is going to one because they need money, so what? Y'all rather not have any pawn shops and just have been people unable to take care of business? Shit happens, sometimes unexpectedly that requires money you just don't have. Being broke isn't fun and if you can somehow come up with money to make it better, even for a short time, that is a good thing.

I'm surprised at all the pawn shop hate. I don't like the shows as much as the next guy (all of the buy/resell shows I dislike) but did y'all have bad experiences with pawn shops? Or did I miss a memo?

Pawn shops can be ok for the reasons Aeinna listed, but they're kinda like loan sharks in my opinion because they're essentially making a living off of peoples desperation. The truth is there is more money to be made in a "legitimate" business dealing in antiques and the other kind of stuff they buy/sell at those pawn shops but getting shit dirt cheap off of peoples desperation and then reselling it (often times misrepresenting the item in the process) is easier. Pawn Shops are also pretty well known for buying and selling illegal and stolen goods. A high profile shop that has it's own show like Pawn Stars probably won't go that route but pawn shops have long been known to sell shady shit. (like name brand guns that have had cheap ass parts put into them, etc).
