Cyberpunk books and stories been making the same sorts of predictions since the 1980's. Envisioning a future where corporations are the real power and governments are just little puppet states that are allowed to continue to exist to make the plebs feel like they have a say in how things are going.
I'm not sure we'll ever actually get there. I can see a hard crackdown hitting Google and related companies over the span of the next 4-5 years. Especially since it seems both sides of the political spectrum are now taking issue with them. They hid for a long time behind the shield of social justice, but that shield has always been made of paper. Those folks eat their own all the time.
